Brussen bundle

Authors: Esmée Koppers, Laila Kourbit, Roos van der Lans, Nienke van Ruiten, Aysenur Yesiloglu.
Educational institution: The Hague University of Applied Sciences
Client: Juliana Children's Hospital
Problem definition: A seriously ill child and the entire medical process surrounding it demands time and attention from parents, which in many cases means that they have less time and attention for other children in the family. The Juliana Children's Hospital got stuck in the guidance and offering tools to parents to pay attention to the brothers or sisters (brothers), in addition to attention to the seriously ill child.
Research question: How can medical pedagogical care providers of the Juliana Children's Hospital support parents to still pay attention to the brussen with their limited time?

End product:

The Juliana Children's Hospital is looking for a flyer, poster or games with the aim of making parents aware of the importance of attention for the brothers and sisters. The students have made several end products:

  1. A poster that can quickly attract the attention of the parents who are in the waiting room or ward of the hospital.
  2. An accompanying flyer that can be handed over by the hospital staff. The flyer offers more information and practical tips for guiding siblings.
  3. The brussenbundle. Educators and parents can use this bundle to start a conversation with the brus, but also to pay attention to the child as an individual. In the concept plan, the brussen bundle contains various tools and games, including a book about emotions and feelings, a planner for activities and hospital visits, board games, Kletspot for kids, and an emotional thermometer.

Result:

Caring for children with a serious illness requires a lot of time and attention from the parents. As a caregiver and as a parent, it is important to realize that siblings also need attention and to know their place in the hospital. With the entire end product, the students meet the needs of the Juliana Children's Hospital.

The client speaks:

“As a department of Medical Pedagogical Care, we are in the process of becoming an official professional association. Part of this is that we are going to create a platform for members. We would like to share the reports of the students there, including the brussen bundle. In this way, all colleagues in the country can use the information and advice they have drawn up. Throughout the country, these are themes that hospitals are working on. This way everyone can integrate it into the plans, methods or systems they already have.” – Anne Weenink, medical pedagogical care provider at the Juliana Children's Hospital and contact person of the Medical Pedagogical Care department
