Participants wanted!

For research into computer games for spouses.

Are you already familiar with the educational game Broedels?

From the Academic Workplace “Social Relations and Attachment” Bartiméus—Free University – Our Second Home, an educational computer game has been developed especially for siblings! Researchers from the VU want to investigate whether this game really helps and are therefore looking for Dutch and Flemish sisters aged 6 to 9 with a brother or sister with a visual and/or intellectual disability.

What is it?

The computer game is intended to support bruses. The game can help you learn to deal with thoughts, feelings and difficult situations that can arise if you have a brother or sister with a disability. With the game we also want to let brussen know: you are not alone!

Trailer

The Broedels are central to the game. These are little, sweet monsters who go through all kinds of things that brothers and sisters can go through. In the game, your child watches animations of the Broedels and films of other siblings, answers questions and plays mini-games. Your child can play the game independently on a computer or tablet. There are also short worksheets for each level that you can print.

What is being asked of you and your child?

Participation in the research is voluntary. If your child participates in the study, he or she will play the game. Your child will then play for 4 weeks, 2 levels of 20 minutes per week. Some children can play the game right away, other children play the game after 3 months. A researcher will also visit your home 3 times, spread over 12-14 weeks. Then you and your child fill in questionnaires about how your child is doing and what he/she thinks and feels.

Participating in this research project requires time from you and your child. Your child will most likely not find this a problem at all. Playing the game is especially fun and earns her or him recognition. As a result, many sisters who participate feel more heard, seen and understood. For you as a parent, the time investment may be an issue. You have your hands full to keep all the balls in the air. However, many parents who have already preceded you indicate that it was well worth the time. They enjoyed working on it so much and it resulted in a really nice contact with the child (the brus).
