Introduction

Pediatric palliative care is care for children with a life-threatening or life-limiting condition and can involve complex care, which can last for months or years. In 2015, the national Individual Care Plan (IZP) was developed and proved to be successful. The IZP can be seen as an instrument to facilitate coordination, quality and continuity of pediatric palliative care. In practice, however, an ICP is often completed too late and for too few children. By further developing and implementing the IZP in the Netherlands, we want to improve the coordination, quality and continuity of care for every child with a life-threatening or life-limiting condition and his/her family.

Methods and analysis

To evaluate the original ICP, interviews and questionnaires were conducted among parents of children who have or had an ICP 1.0 and healthcare professionals who have used ICP 1.0. IZP 1.0 will be further developed on the basis of the results. In an implementation period of approximately 7 months, an implementation strategy will be written and the renewed IZP, IZP 2.0, will be tested nationally. During the implementation period, IZP 2.0 will be used for all children enrolled in pediatric palliative care teams. After the implementation period, ICP 2.0 will be evaluated on the basis of interviews and questionnaires among parents of children who have received ICP 2.0 and healthcare professionals who have worked with ICP 2.0. Based on these results, IZP 2.0 will be further optimized to the final version: IZP 3.0.

Ethics and Dissemination

This study received ethical approval. The IZP 3.0 will be distributed through the Knowledge Center for Pediatric Palliative Care, to ensure wide availability to the general public and care providers within the field of child palliative care. In addition, we strive to publish study results and to present results at national and international scientific meetings.
