Paediatric Palliative Care & Paediatric Oncology

The annual meeting European Society for Paediatric Oncology.

In 2022 the European Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOP Europe) launched a multidisciplinary Palliative Care Working Group, led by palliative paediatric oncologist Ana Lacerda (who also chairs our Reference Group).

This year’s Annual Meeting happened in Valencia, Spain, from 8 to 12 May, and the main Plenary session was given by Dr Michael McNeill, Director of the Dept. of Palliative Care at the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, USA: Improvement Science in Pediatric Oncology – Thinking Beyond the Clinical Trial. It was followed by a joint session led by the by the parents' group, Grieving and Loss – Speaking about the unspeakable.

The group was also responsible for a session about Early vs. Late Palliative Care, during which an informative flyer was launched. This is already being translated into several European languages, to facilitate spreading the message.

The group is also involved in other SIOP Europe educational activities, like educational courses and the review of the standards of care for children with cancer.

Make sure to check the group’s page soon - you can apply to become a member and download the flyer
