New enhanced e-learning course on Neonatal Palliative Care

The course has been developed to build the confidence and skills in the neonatal workforce to support these babies and families through these most difficult of times.

The International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN) has just released a new, free to access, e-learning course entitled, Neonatal Palliative Care: An Enhanced Course.

The need for neonatal palliative care globally is huge. In 2021, approximately 2.3 million babies died in the first month of life, which translates to 6,400 babies dying every day. Location matters - a baby born in Sub-Saharan Africa is 11 times more likely to die in the first month of life than a child born in Australia or New Zealand. This free online course has been developed to meet the need to deliver care to the growing numbers of these critically ill babies and their families.

It has been developed in partnership with Alex Mancini-Smith National Lead Nurse for Neonatal Palliative Care in the UK and Lead Editor of Neonatal Palliative Care for Nurses, on which this course is based. It draws on experience of neonatal palliative care in the UK but much of the content will have global application. Covering issues from genetics and ethics to supporting families antenatally, perinatally, and postnatally as their baby is born and dies.

The course has been developed to build the confidence and skills in the neonatal workforce to support these babies and families through these most difficult of times.
