Meaning in pediatric palliative care: updated CONNECT toolkit available

With innovative materials, we want to help healthcare providers to give even more attention to what really matters.

When a child becomes seriously ill or dies, everything changes. What once seemed self-evident becomes a life-or-death question. In such situations, both parents and young people search for new meaning or direction in their lives. Caregivers can make a significant difference by providing space for these questions—and by knowing when additional support is needed.

The CONNECT project investigated how healthcare professionals can support parents of seriously ill children at home with meaning and life questions. As a result, the CONNECT toolkit materials have now been updated and expanded .

The toolkit helps healthcare providers:

  • recognizing when meaning plays a role,
  • to start a conversation about it,
  • and, when necessary, refer to specialist guidance such as spiritual counselors.

What's new?

The updated toolkit includes:

  • A brochure about meaningful care for young people aged 18-/18+ with a serious illness or disability — intended for care providers and their network
  • A brochure about which organization you can contact for referral to meaningful care for which target group, with information about the Integrated Child Care Networks and the Centers for Life Questions
  • An update to the brochure for professionals, including the ABC model, a step-by-step approach and new insights from practice

The materials are practical and have been tailored to the needs of experienced professionals, healthcare providers, and national networks. They are relevant to daily home care practices during the palliative phase.
