European collaboration in paediatric palliative care

Looking for knowledge and resources to support your work in paediatric palliative care? Across Europe, collaborative projects are developing practical recommendations, educational materials and new approaches to care. Below, discover four initiatives, what they are developing and where to find more information.

Hope4Kids

Hope4Kids (Holistic Oncological Palliative Care 4 Europe’s Kids) aims to improve the quality and accessibility of paediatric palliative care in Europe, with a particular focus on children with cancer. The project is developing harmonised European paediatric palliative care guidelines, mapping paediatric palliative care provision across Europe and conducting four pilot studies exploring innovative approaches to care. It is also developing education and training materials in multiple languages for healthcare professionals and family caregivers.

This EU Joint Action is funded through EU4Health and brings together 23 countries and more than 70 partner organisations. The project runs until September 2029.

PALLIAKID

PALLIAKID aims to evaluate the feasibility, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of new interventions for children and young adults with palliative care needs. Its work focuses on early identification of patients with palliative care needs using artificial intelligence (AI), comprehensive assessment of children’s and families’ needs, and the development of interdisciplinary care plans.

PALLIAKID brings together 19 organisations across 10 countries. It is funded through the EU’s Horizon Europe programme and runs until May 2028.

European Youth Cancer Network (YARN)

The European Youth Cancer Network (YARN) connects young people affected by cancer. Its interactive website offers information and resources for adolescent and young adult cancer survivors and now includes content on palliative and end-of-life care.

The project is co-funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe programme.  Explore the resources at beatcancer.eu.

European Reference Network for Paediatric Cancer (ERNPaedCan)

The European Reference Network for Paediatric Cancer (ERNPaedCan) aims to reduce inequalities in cancer care, facilitate virtual tumour board meetings and connect specialists across Europe. In collaboration with the SIOP Europe Palliative Care Working Group, ERNPaedCan developed Standard Clinical Practice Recommendations for Palliative Care.
